It’s beginning to look a lot like movies! Starting this Friday (November 20th), the holiday movie seasons will officially begin. We’ve got 5 weeks of Star Wars, whale wars, and Oscar wars coming before the 2015 movie season nosedives into the doldrums of January and February. There’s a ton of films coming out; more than I could possibly list here, but I’ve compiled a listing of the top 10 I’m most excited about. Check it out!
Please note that some of these release dates are the limited release of these films. Some of these films that will not go wide until 2016. However, if they’re on this list, you should find a way to see them. Look at your local arthouse theater…or go somewhere that has one if your city sucks. This list is in order of release.
1) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 – November 20th
The Hunger Games franchise is finally coming to an explosive ending tomorrow as Katniss and Co. storm the capital to overthrow the evil President Snow. While I really disliked the Mockingjay book, I was pleasantly surprised by Part 1 of the movie. It took what was the boring, slow parts of the book and turned it into an exciting film about the power of propaganda. By dividing the last book into two parts, this final film promises to be action packed.
2) Creed – November 25th
Guys. New Rocky movie. Michael B. Jordan. Sylvester Stallone. Ryan Coogler. Enough Said.
3) The Good Dinosaur – November 25th
Getting two Pixar movies in one year is a rare treat. Getting two original Pixar stories in one year is something that will probably never happen again. For the rest of the decade it seems that Pixar will be diving back into sequel-land with Cars 3, Toy Story 4, Finding Dory, and The Incredibles 2. But until then we have The Good Dinosaur, a boy and his dog story with the twist. The most interesting thing about this film is the art style. Pixar has chosen to create cartoon looking characters and place them in a photorealistic world. I don’t know if it will work. I don’t know if it will be as good as the incredible Inside Out. But I can’t wait to find out.
4) The Night Before – November 25th

As a general rule, whenever Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg make a movie, you should pay attention. The minds behind Superbad, The Interview, Neighbors, and the shockingly good This Is The End are back to tell a Christmas tale about a group of childish adults having a bunch of crazy antics. It’s not exactly an original formula, but don’t fix what isn’t broken, right? I’m going into this one expecting to laugh a lot and have a good time. I hope I’m not disappointed.
5) Krampus – December 4th
Every time I’ve seen this trailer in the theater, the people sitting around me whisper to each other “That looks really stupid.” I honestly can’t blame them for saying that. Krampus looks silly and ridiculous. But it also looks scary and wonderfully detailed, filled with fun Christmas mythology twists. I love films that take the traditions we’re so used to and turn them into something new and dangerous. Krampus promises to wind up a cult movie favorite and, hopefully a film I’ll want to watch every holiday season.
6) Macbeth – December 4th
Shakespeare is awesome and Macbeth is one of his best works. I’d probably be excited about any new film adaptation of the work, but this one in particular has me really excited. Michael Fassbender as Macbeth and Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth look great and the cinematography of this one looks wonderfully dense, dark and beautiful. The only issue is every time I see Fassbender in a new role, I imagine him doing it in the Frank head:
7) In The Heart Of The Sea – December 11th
In The Heart Of The Sea was supposed to come out in March. And then it didn’t. I’m not sure what this says about the film’s quality, but I’m still excited. The supposed “true story” that inspired Moby Dick, this movie has Thor fighting a giant whale. There’s also a whole lot of fire considering it’s a movie that takes place in the heart of the sea. I wonder if Jonah will show up? Either way, Ron Howard and Chris Hemsworth’s involvement has me interested. I hope this movie ends up good.
8) Star Wars: The Force Awakens – December 18th
The sins of the prequels appear to be all but forgotten and we’re all ready for some new Star Wars. If this movie is even kinda good it’s going to make billions and billions of dollars. In spite of myself, I’m excited. I hope I’m not let down. The bar is so low that could just walk over it. Help me The Force Awakens, you’re my only hope.
9) The Hateful Eight – December 25th
Quentin Tarantino is the second best living director on the planet right now. Anything he does I will be interested in, especially since he appears to just keep getting better and better. The most exciting part about The Hateful Eight is that I really don’t know what it’s going to be about. The above trailer sets the stage and introduces the characters, but does little else. Will this be my new favorite QT movie? It certainly would be a wonderful Christmas present.
10) The Revenant – December 25th
I didn’t much care for Inarritu’s Birdman. It was beautifully shot and had some great performances, but the film’s story and themes didn’t work for me. Regardless, I’m very interested in Inarritu’s new film The Revenant. Shot entirely outdoors using only natural lighting, the movie looks intensely visceral and violent. Both Tom Hardy and Leo DiCaprio’s involvement don’t hurt it either. It’s the type of film that has the chance to make me rethink how I view a director. We will find out this Christmas.
So here is my list. Like with my fall movies, I was forced to cut a lot of good films. If your most anticipated wasn’t on this list it doesn’t mean I don’t want to see it. I just wanna see these more. What are your most anticipated Holiday movies? How awesome is Creed gonna be? Will Star Wars suck? Let us know in the comments below!
Many of these look good, well not Krampus, but I would like to add Concussion, Joy and Sisters to this list. I have seen the trailer for all of these. Will Smith looks awesome in Concussion and amazingly so we didn’t recognize him right away. Good things have been said about Joy and Jennifer Lawrence indicating another possible Oscar nod. And Sisters has Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and if you can recommend the male counterpart of Seth Rogen than I can recommend them! What are we going to see over Thanksgiving that you haven’t already seen by then!
Both Concussion and Sisters were on my list too, but I had to cut something. Not to thrilled about Joy. I’ll end up seeing it but I’m tired of Russell.
Mockingjay, Creed and spotlight will be seen before thanksgiving
